In the meantime, here’s a snippet from Chapter 1 of Garden Folly Magic. As you can see, female lead Maria Kellway has a rather dramatic first meeting with the male lead, Lord Markham.
The magical lighting from the terrace did not reach this far into the garden. As a result, Maria did not see the stranger in time to avoid him. She assumed she was alone until a dark figure stepped out of the shadows. A jolt of surprise made her heart thump unevenly as the stranger loomed over her.
“At last,” a voice purred in the darkness. “I thought you had forgotten me.”
Maria froze. The stranger’s voice was deep and husky, and her first instinct was to turn tail and run. But she could not make her feet obey her will. Instead of stepping back towards the light, she stood stock-still as the shadowy figure drew nearer.
“Why so shy, love?” Laughter colored the masculine voice. “Shouldn’t we be on the most intimate terms by now? Given our last encounter, I mean?”
Maria’s stomach curdled at the unspoken suggestions lurking beneath the stranger’s words. Whoever this was, he’d made a serious mistake. She drew a deep breath, preparing to inform him of his error. But before she could speak, he put a hand on her shoulder, lowering his head to press a kiss against her mouth.
Maria had never been kissed. She had always imagined kisses as soft, tender, and sweet. But the stranger’s mouth felt hot, hard, and hungry. So, she did what any self-respecting debutante would do: she struck him in the face with her fan.
“What the hell?” he yelped. To her relief, he stumbled away from her. “Susanna?”
“You have the wrong girl!” Maria intended to speak boldly, but her quavering voice probably revealed her fear. She took a deep breath and drew herself up to her full height. Which was unfortunately not particularly high. “I am not Susanna.” Whoever Susanna was, she had execrable taste in men. That much seemed clear.
