Blurb:

Richard Selwyn has a simple plan: throw a holiday house party to help his younger brother find a wife. Richard, having no desire to disturb his comfortable bachelor life, isn’t looking for his own match. But he didn’t expect a castle full of secrets, a jewel thief, and a kiss under the mistletoe that might very well change the course of his life.

Ivy Burnley was raised in luxury by her noble uncle and aunt, but her own parentage is so scandalous that she believes herself unfit to marry a gentleman. She arrives at Selwyn Castle intending only to help chaperone her debutante cousin during the house party. As Christmas draws nearer, winter walks, evening waltzes, and a handsome earl challenge Ivy’s resolution to stay single.

When an unknown thief steals one of Ivy’s most priceless possessions, she’ll need Richard’s help to move past the shame of her background and uncover all the secrets at Selwyn Castle.

Presenting: SECRETS AT SELWYN CASTLE!

As you may know, I have a series of closed-door/”sweet” Regency romances forthcoming from Dragonblade Publishing. The first novel, Secrets at Selwyn Castle, is scheduled to release in summer 2024, with a tentative release date of 8.30.24. And today, I get to unveil the cover! Presenting. . . <drumroll> Richard and Ivy!

I love this cover so much, mostly because of the expressions on the characters’ faces—especially Richard. The artist (Dar) did a great job capturing this sweet silver fox.

Secrets at Selwyn Castle is an age-gap romance with a pinch of cozy mystery. It’s got a holiday house party, waltzing, and kisses under the mistletoe. In length, it’s a little longer than a novella but shorter than a typical full-length novel—perfect for holiday reading.

Can’t wait until you all get to enter the world of Beau Monde Secrets!

Introducing Richard and Ivy

My next book, The Secrets of Selwyn Castle, is scheduled for release in August 2024. It’s a low-heat (kissing-only) Regency romance, and it will be the first installment in my new series, Beau Monde Secrets. Unlike The Solitary Rose, the Beau Monde Secrets books won’t contain magic or fantasy elements. But The Secrets of Selwyn Castle contains more than a hint of mystery, and it’s brimming with Christmas cheer. I hope it will become some readers’ new holiday favorite.

Here’s how I pitched the book:

Richard Selwyn had a simple plan: throw a holiday house party to help his younger brother find a wife. That will secure the succession of the family title without disturbing Richard’s comfortable life as a bachelor. He didn’t expect a castle full of secrets, a jewel thief, and a kiss under the mistletoe that just might change the course of his life.

Ivy Burnley was raised in luxury by her noble uncle and aunt, but her own parentage is so scandalous that she believes herself unfit to be the wife of a gentleman. She arrives at Selwyn Castle intending only to help chaperone her debutante cousin. But winter walks, waltzes, and a handsome earl challenge her resolution to stay single. When the loss of an heirloom ring leads her to reveal her darkest family secret, Ivy must decide whether to continue letting shame hold her back or move beyond her past into a new future.

And now, it is my pleasure to present . . .Miss Ivy Burnley and Richard Selwyn, Lord Inglewhite!

A Week Full of Book News!

If you follow me on social media, you’re probably aware that my debut romance, The Solitary Rose, is now out in the world. You can buy it from the usual online booksellers. Alternatively, consider requesting your local library to purchase it. It’s been positively reviewed by both InD’Tale Magazine and Affaire De Coeur.Magazine.

But that’s not my only exciting book news this week! I am pleased to announce that I’m working on a new series of low-heat/non-steamy Regency romances. This series, The Beau Monde Secrets, will be published by Dragonblade Publishing, a small press focusing on historical romance.

The first book in the series, Secrets at Selwyn Castle, is scheduled to release in the summer of 2024. I can’t wait to introduce readers to Richard, Ivy, and the holiday house party gathered at Selwyn Castle! Watch this space for more information about this new project.

Launch Party: Day 2

Today we’re going to talk about the kinds of magic possible in the fantastic version of Regency England of The Solitary Rose. Magical abilities in this fantasy ‘verse are hereditary, though they can skip a generation, and not all members of a family will have magic. Most people in this world do not have any magical abilities.

The most common form of magic is wizardy or witchcraft. Wizards and witches work spells, charms, or potions using magical ingredients. These ingredients typically include plants (such as herbs) or minerals (such as crystals). Common substances like salt or water can also be ingredients in some spells. Some magicians work magic using blood or other parts of animals, but this is considered unsavory at best and at worst may be illegal. Elwood Ainsworth (“Uncle Elwood”) of The Solitary Rose is a professional wizard who specializes in warding spells.

Sorcery is the second most common form of magic. Sorcerers do not need ingredients like herbs or crystals to work their spells: they just use words or gestures. Henry Dawson, the male lead of The Solitary Rose, is a sorcerer. He can summon a light or unlock a door with a few words and a snap of his fingers. It’s a handy gift to have, because it means he doesn’t need to carry magical ingredients around with him.

Magecraft is the rarest form of magic. Mages work magic using only their minds, without adding ingredients or chanting spells. Most mages are limited in what they can do. For example, a mage might be confined to healing magic. Magecraft could also include the ability to see magic, predict the future (precognition), sense weather changes, or read people’s auras.

Empathy and telepathy are both forms of magecraft. Emma Ainsworth, the female lead of The Solitary Rose, is a very sensitive empath. She feels other people’s emotions and sensations (such as pain, pleasure, or fatigue). Unlike some empaths, she lacks the ability to block out other people’s emotions, and being around other people can overwhelm or exhaust her. Basically, she experiences a magical form of sensory overload.

Now you know the different types of magic, do you want to find out what kind of magic you’d have if you lived in this world? Click on this link to spin the wheel and see what magical gift you’d get! Launch Party: Day 1

My debut romance, THE SOLITARY ROSE, launches on August 14! For the next week, I’m hosting an online launch party here on my blog.

For today’s activity, you get to pick a “Regency name” using the name generator on The Regency Reader. I sometimes use this name generator when brainstorming names for characters. It’s particularly helpful for last names, since I struggle with them.

Click here for the Regency female name generator, or here for the Regency male name generator.

Then, share your new name in the comments! I got “Eliza Hunt,” which is actually a perfectly reasonable name— not nearly as ridiculous as many of the names I’ve generated in the past.

Giveaway Alert! Post your Regency name in the comments to enter this week’s giveaway. You can win either a paperback copy of The Solitary Rose (US residents) or a digital copy (international residents). Winners will be announced on August 13.

Mark your calendars! My debut romance novel The Solitary Rose launches on August 14. (Obligatory preorder link HERE.)

To celebrate and prepare for it, I’m holding an online launch party here on this blog, starting August 7. We’ll count down to launch day with one post a day.

What will the party involve? I’ll post some snippets from the novel and host some fun games. Readers will have a chance to interact with me and other readers in the comments. There will also be giveaways for a physical copy of the book (open to US residents) or a digital copy (international).

Can’t wait to celebrate with you all!

Teaser from THE SOLITARY ROSE

I’ve shared character art, buy links, and the cover image for THE SOLITARY ROSE, but you know what I haven’t shared? An excerpt from the book! Here is the official teaser: a scrap of dialogue between impoverished sorcerer Henry Dawson and wealthy recluse Emma Ainsworth.

This argument maddened him. He wanted to bury his head under a pillow and forget it had ever happened. “I am not engaged to you, I am not married to you, and I will not sell my virtue. You will have to find someone else to experiment on. The only woman I am planning on bedding is my wife. You don’t want to marry me, do you? Then this conversation is over.”

Miss Ainsworth narrowed her eyes. She lifted one arm so she could rest her chin on her hand as she looked at Henry. Henry grew nervous. He could not imagine what she was going to try next, but from the look on her face, she was not ready to throw down her arms. He felt even more certain of that when a slow smile crossed her bewitching lips. Something about that smile made the hairs on his arms stand up straight.

“Very well, Mr. Dawson,” she said. “You win.”

Henry blinked. If he had won, why was she smiling like the proverbial cat who had stolen the cream? “What have I won?” he asked cautiously.

“My hand in marriage, of course,” she replied. “I accept your proposal. We are betrothed now.”

If you are a book blogger or reviewer interested in an Advance Reader Copy, feel free to contact me! This novel is likely to appeal particularly to fans of Regency romance who like a touch of magic mingled with their history. (Compare to the Regency fantasy of Olivia Atwater or Stephanie Burgis.)

Coming Soon: THE SOLITARY ROSE

I’m happy to be able to reveal the cover design for my fantasy romance, The Solitary Rose. This is a gender-flipped retelling of “The Beauty and the Beast,” set in a fantastic version of Regency England. It will be published by The Wild Rose Press under my “Anne Rollins” pseudonym (publication date not yet set).

Here’s the current blurb:

Henry Dawson, sorcerer and apothecary assistant, works to support his mother and younger siblings after his father’s investments and consequent death leave them penniless. Invited to woo a reclusive heiress with magical empathy, he reluctantly accepts, despite a preference for earning his own way. Emma Ainsworth fears smallpox scars and her hypersensitivity to others’ thoughts make her ineligible for marriage. Sheltered by her aunt and uncle, she has withdrawn from most social life and wears a veil whenever she must go out. When a serious injury confines Henry to Emma’s estate for the summer, a verbal duel ensues—Emma wants to test her empathy in a sexual relationship, not marry him. What neither admits is their fear that passion might burn them both.
